The Real Hard Work Begins

IMG_20131027_185111So the last couple of months didn’t really go to plan in terms of ze bloggy blog.  Nope.  Not at all.  Turns out the PT course was more full on than I originally thought.  Don’t get me wrong, I knew it would be intense and I knew  I’d need to put in some hard work but I just didn’t realise how caught up with it all I’d become.  Totally in a good way though.  I knew I’d give it my all.  The geek in me thrives at the chance to learn and the thought of getting back into almost the student/school type environment had me extremely excited.  The fact that it was going to be health and fitness related just tipped me over the edge!  The day before my course was due to start I headed out for “some last-minute bits” and came home with 2 complete new gym outfits, exercise book and new stationary equipment.  My bank account wasn’t thanking me, but it was all in the name of my new career so fully and 100% justified, naturally.

I can honestly say that completed the 6 weeks course was hands down, the best thing I’ve decided to do.  I’ve learnt so much more than I would have imagined from Anatomy and Physiology and Nutrition to the more practical side of things such as planning and delivering personal training, gym sessions and group classes and I also picked up plenty of hints and tips for myself personally when training.  It was tough.  I spent a lot of weekends revising for theory exams and getting family and Blayne to test me, but I loved it.  I’ve walked away from it all with:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing
  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
  • Certificate in Studio Cycling (Spinning)
  • Certificate in Circuit Training
  • Certificate in Gym Based Boxing
  • Certificate in Sports Nutrition
  • An even greater love for health and fitness and passion to make a living from it

So now it’s time to put it all into action.  It’s a hard industry to get into but I’ve got the passion and will to success.  Determination Today Leads To Success Tomorrow.  I already have some gym space that I am renting so now it’s a case of getting my name out and there and proving that I can help people reach their health and fitness goals.  I’ve been there.  Through determination, hard work and teaching myself I’ve lost over 5 stone (70 lbs/32kg) in weight and have maintained it over 5 years.  I’m still learning everyday, new training systems, new hints and tips, new recipe ideas, and I love it!  I love that I now have the opportunity to help other people do the same, and have the qualifications to back it up!  Exciting times are ahead.

Tonight, I’m meeting with my potential first client.  He is a friend of mine but I’m nervous.  I think it’s sometimes harder when it’s someone you already know but it’s a good starting point as well.  So, I’m making sure I’m going to turn up prepared.  Ready to take notes, ready to listen to what he wants to achieve and ready to help him get to where he wants to be!

The Next Chapter


I am no longer an office worker.  On Friday I closed that door, and walked through a new door to a new future. I know that challenges will lay ahead of me, but health and fitness is something I am completely passionate about, so going back to school to become at personal trainer excites me more than the nerves.  I was completely spoiled by my work collegues on Friday; lunch with the girls, the cutest owl vest top and then at 4pm wine, nibbles and a toast to wish me to best of luck on my next adventure.  Then the gift were brought out and I was gobsmacked by what I received…a 3 hour sushi-making class for two, a polar FT4 heart rate monitor that I have been lusting over for months and £140 worth of vouchers to spend at Nike.  Very very happy Lozzie indeed!  I wasn’t expecting anything at so the fact that the gifts I got were also things that completely excited me was totally out of the blue but very very much appreciated.

I was extremely excited to try out my Polar FT4 the next moring during my body attack class and I couldn’t have asked for more from it.  It was easy to use and accurate and will definately be coming with me every time I go to the gym.  I’m also interested in using it during my trip to Alton Towers on Wednesday as there will be a lot of walking involved.

ImageI love Body Attack!  It’s such a touch class and I really feel like I’m working every muscle in my body.  By the end of class I resemble a big red sweaty mess but I feel great!  The energy the instructor has is admirable – I can barely breathe during class, let alone be able to shout encouragement to everyone else!!  However, saying this, I want to be doing it.  I’d love to be a fitness instructor as well as a personal trainer.  My ultimate aim, after comepleting my personal training course is to then go on to do an exercise to music qualification and then becoming qualified to teach Les Mills classes: Body Attack, Body Pump, Body Step & Body Jam are all classes that interest me so I plan on attending as many classes as I can during my month off, before going back to school, to get a better understanding of the classes and what is involved, from both an instructor and participant point of view, especially as there are a couple that I’ve haven’t tried yet.

Seeing as I have a month off, I’ve put together a September Goals list for myself:1.  Do  a Body Step class
2.  Do a Body Jam class
3.  Complete an outdoor run (either street or track)
4.  Buy clothes for PT course

I’ve also decided to try and get over my hatred of Burpees but trying my hand at a 30 day burpees challenage, but more about that (an my 30 day squat challange) next time.

I could take September as a month of lesuire and bum around and do absolutely nothing, and I’m sure there will be a couple of days like that, but I like to keep busy and active.  Gym sessions, new workouts, day trips with The Boyfriend and spending time with my baby neice will be in abundance.  Yes, I’m certainly looking forward to September, and the furture.




In Which Life Happens

It’s not that I’ve been avoiding this place, it’s just that life has happened and my time management hasn’t properly been up to scratch.  To sum it up:

  1. My last day at work has been brought forward by one month.  I finish this Friday, so a lot of time has been spent making sure everything is done and up to day in the office as well as catching up with people who work in the City.  Once I am back to school and then qualified it will be on the very odd occassion that I will actually be able to venture into London.
  2. My brother and his girlfriend have welcomed the most precious little girl into the world and I’ve fallen totally in love.  I wasn’t really a huge fan of children, in fact, I used to avoid them where possible, but my niece has completely stolen my heart.  I want to spend every spare minute I can with her and hate it when I have to leave

As a result of aforementioned points, my blog-keeping skills have been pretty poor.  In fact, all my social media has fallen slightly massively.  But fear not, from next week I have a whole 4 weeks until I start my Personal Training course.  I have plently of things to research and blog posts to get cracking on and plan to dedicate a great portion of my month break in getting everything up and running and getting some kind of order in place.  Also trying out some new exercise classes and getting myself prepared for my next life adventure.  The vegan pledge has been going well, apart from one day over the Bank Holiday weekend where cheese was involved, but I didn’t let myself dwel on it too much.  It’s certainly given me lots to think about in terms of re-addressing what I’m fueling my body with.

So there you have it.  I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.  Life just seemed to happen at an alarming race and I forgot the concept of time management.

Post-Holiday Blues

This weekend was filled with experimenting in the kitchen.  I discovered the use of nutritional yeast to make my mac n’ cheese vegan, and with the addition of vegan chorizo for a little kick, it was a great Friday night dish to veg in front of the T.V with, coupled with a couple of glasses of white wine and cuddled up to Blayne.  Saturday I tried my hand a veganising Caribbean spiced shepherd’s pie, which was already a hit with everyone that’s tried and this time around it also didn’t fail.  I also entered the world of vegan desserts with a raw chocolate cream cake, using ground pecans, dates, vanilla and cocoa powder for base and almonds, maple syrup cocoa powder and coconut oil for the creamy topping.  So rich and decadent and all gone by the end of the weekend.








I also took the time to plan for the weekend ahead.  I always seem to struggle to get back into the swing of things in terms of my diet and gym when I get back from a holiday, the post-holiday blues take over and all I want to do is curl up after a day at the office with a family-sized bar of chocolate, a good book, and wish I could be on a permanent holiday.  Luckily, the excitement over the start of my vegan pledge last week and trying out all these new foods meant that I skipped the eat-everything-in-sight side of my post-holiday blues.  The gym side, however, was a different story.  I normally aim to workout in some way 5-6 times a week, but after a holiday it just doesn’t happen.  Last week I managed a Zumba class after work on Wednesday and a brief leg and cardio session on Saturday morning with Blayne.  It’s strange because I love to workout, and, with the happy endorphins that working out releases, you’d think that it would be the perfect way to beat the post-holiday blues.  So, with that in mind, I took some time on Sunday to plan my workout schedule for the week.  I plan on 2 cardio classes, 1 strength training class and 3 gym sessions that I will plan a schedule for before I go.  This helps ensure I keep on track and stay until I’m done.  The body achieves what the mind believes.

My gym bag is already packed and in my car so I can just jump right in when I get home from work and head straight there.  There are no excuses.




Day 1 = Success

Day one of my VEGAN PLEDGE completed and it was a success:


Breakfast:           Whole Wheat Bran Flakes with Almond Milk & Blueberries
Lunch:                   Whole Wheat Cous Cous Salad seasoned with Thai 7 Spice & Edamame
Dinner:                 Portabella Mushroom ‘Cheese’ Burger using vegan Mozzarella
Snacks:                 Apple, Dried Fruit, Nakd Bar, Soya Dark Chocolate Dessert

This was just using ingredients that I had lying around the house, apart from the vegan cheese, which I picked up from a health food store by my office.  After work I went to the supermarket and stocked up on some vegan staples to help me try out some of the marvellous recipes I’ve been spying over at Pinterest.  This weekend will see me trying my hand at a vegan mac n’ cheese (my ultimate comfort food), Raw/Vegan Triple Chocolate Cream Cakes and also veganising one of my speciality dishes, Caribbean Spiced Shepherd’s Pie.  I first came across the recipe in one of my dad’s Levi Roots cook books and just had to try it, minus the lamb mince and chicken stock, which I substituted for Quorn Mince and vegetable stock.  However, one thing that has come to light since trying my hand at the vegan diet is that Quorn products are off limits, as well as a few other meat free products you can pick up from the supermarkets, due to addition of dried egg whites and sometimes milk.  I’ve managed to hunt down some vegan friendly mince and will be using a soya spread instead of butter for the mash potato topping (which will be sweet potato mash).  I’m lucky that my Blayne and the rest of my family enjoy being my guinea pig when I’m trying new recipes, even though they are all meat & dairy eaters, and if they aren’t keen, then at least I know there will always be leftovers for me to take to work for lunches during the week (this NEVER happens with cakes, cookies or any kind of dessert/sweet effort).

My Pledge

Amsterdam Memories

Amsterdam was everything I dreamed it would be, of course.  I’m just glad that Blayne fell in love with my favourite place in the world as much as I hoped he would.  He can now also back me up on my bold statement of eating the best fries in the world.  We were extremely lucky with the weather, not a single drop of rain and gloriously hot and sunny.  Perfect!  We didn’t get round to hiring bikes in the end; there were so many people in the city for gay pride that navigating around the city by bicycle seemed to be proving difficult for tourists and locals alike, but we walked for miles and miles, only jumping onto a tram once throughout the whole trip so that we were on time to meet a friend.  We met up with most of my friends, Blayne finally got to put faces to the tales I had been telling him and everyone got on so well – the whole trip could not have been more perfect, well, apart from having to come back.

So, it’s back to England and back to commuting to London for me.  This morning I couldn’t help but compare it to Amsterdam (as I have done so often since moving back from Amsterdam, two years ago).  Everyone is in a rush in London.  Everyone has somewhere they need to be, like, yesterday.  The cars drive faster, even the bikes cycle faster.  Amsterdam is so much more relaxed and easy going…*sigh*…

Anyway, enough nostalgia for the time being.  So, as with every holiday I go on, I managed to come home with a few extra lbs.  But I don’t dwell on it.  You just have to get back into your routine.  9 times out of 10 it’s just water weight that I put on, purely down the fact that I drink a little lot more alcohol than I would normally, and far too little water.  Naughty.  Very naughty.  I also found myself reading a very insightful book that got my thinking about what I’m actually fuelling my body with.  During my weight loss journey I toyed with a vegan diet for a while, but I went about it all wrong.  I ended up living off of fruit and vegan junk food, and got sick.  I hadn’t eaten meat for a while before trying a vegan diet but I certainly didn’t go back to eating meat.  I also stuck with soya/almond milk but I did start eating fish, eggs and other dairy products again.  So, after reading aforementioned book, which promotes a healthy nutritious diet, free from animal products and full of whole foods, fruits and veggies, along with providing some great meal plans, I was inspired to give a vegan diet another shot.  But I’ve done it properly this time.

 Their website is a fantastic resource for helping you with the transition into a vegan diet.  You can also take a vegan pledge.  So, yesterday I made my pledge.  A 30 day pledge to eat only vegan.  You can also choice to be assigned a mentor who will offer you guidance throughout your pledge.  My pledge starts from today and I’m incredibly excited.  I have prepared a basic meal plan for today, using the ingredients I already had at home, which I will post in picture form tomorrow.  Today will mainly see me searching through Pinterest for exciting new recipes and ideas and writing a shopping list for the weekend.


Holiday Prep


Bright and early Friday morning The Boy and I are heading to Amsterdam to spend the weekend.  To say I’m excited would be the understatement of the century.  I spent 2 and a half years living in Amsterdam and it is my favourite place in the world, so far.  Everything about the city enchants me.  The people, the culture, the history, the sights, everything.  The Boy has never been, so I’m looking forward to playing tour guide and can’t wait to introduce him to my friends.  It’s also Gay Pride weekend, and the weather is supposed to be scorching, so it’ll be a great weekend for him to see it for the first time.  Amsterdam embraces the weekend fully and what with the party atmosphere in the streets, parties on the boats and the canal parade, he is in for a treat!

Now obviously, no matter if I’m heading off for a beach holiday for two weeks or a weekend break to a beautiful city, I always amp up the workouts and pay a bit of extra attention to what I feed my body in the run up to it and I’m sure most people are the same.  Let’s face it, we all want to be looking and feeling our best when we are on holiday right?!  Also, when it comes to being on holiday I always end up relaxing slightly and always eat maybe a little more than I would normally but that’s what it’s all about for me.  Embracing the culture and trying everything the country/city has to offer.  Plus, Amsterdam has THE BEST FRIES I have ever had and with 20 different sauces available, I will certainly be indulging

So, while daydreaming of falling into a Netherland Fry coma I’ve been hitting the gym for some extra Zumba classes and pushing myself a little further on the treadmill, as well as throwing in a couple of extra sessions of weight and strength training.  Food during this time has been basic and nourishing; lots of fresh salads with plenty of protein in the form of fish and, of course, drinking plenty of water and green tea.

The best way to see Amsterdam is on foot, or bicycle (and also a fantastic way to burn off those fries!).  Biking in Amsterdam is fun and easy – the city is so flat and bike paths are everywhere.  Renting a bicycle is easy and cheap, it’s one of the most used modes of transport and everywhere you look there will be someone on a bike so if you do intend to get involved, I’d recommend reading these Amsterdam biking hints and tips before you get going.

So, here’s to a great weekend, full of fun, friends, culture and, of course, fries!
